Who are we?
We are the Trivia Team of Lisgar Collegiate Institute, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Up until our 2005-2006 season, we
were known simply as the Reach for the Top team. After a long absence from the Canadian trivia game Reach for
the Top, our school team was reborn in 1999, and has been going strong ever since. We have made it into the top
ten in the province every year since 2001; you may have seen us on TVOntario's broadcasts of the Ontario
provincial finals. We hope to make it there again this year.
This fall, however, we decided to expand our repertoire, just as the US-based National Academic Quiz
Tournaments (NAQT) started expanding their range. November 16, 2005, was the first time a NAQT
high-school-level tournament was held in Canada. It was hosted by the University of Ottawa, where our coach
Tamara Vardomskaya plays in NAQT tournaments at the university level. After a bit of coaching, we sent two
teams to the tournament to try our skills against other Eastern Ontario high schools in this new game. Our "Lisgar
B" team swept the field, winning with a 10-0 record and taking the top individual junior and senior titles, won by
James Cooper and Nevin Hotson. This achievement made us the first Canadian team to ever be invited to the High
School National Championship Tournament, which is happening in Chicago June 2-4 of this year.
Our trivia night was a fantastic success! Congratulations to the Flying Mongooses team, who emerged the winners after a spirited battle with the Plush Toys of Darkness team, which came second. We raised over $2000, and everyone greatly enjoyed the event. We thank Bob Irvine for a wonderful job as quizmaster. A round of applause goes to the Lisgar Improv Team, who gave a hilarious performance before the show.
We thank our sponsors who made this possible.
